Description

Tension in the back can be really unpleasant, and in some cases completely debilitating. Problems in this area of the body are also surprisingly common, with 60 to 70% of us experiencing non-specific lower back pain at some point during our lifetimes, according to the WHO. This should be encouragement enough for us all to learn more about how the back works and what we can do to prevent tension and pain in this crucial area of the body.

In this webinar, Eric Franklin demonstrates how the Franklin Method approaches lower back health. You will not only learn about the structure and function of the lower back fascia, you will also find out how to train it effectively and embody it through imagery.

Biography

Eric is the founder of the Franklin Method Institute, and he has spent decades developing and optimizing the Franklin Method – a ground-breaking training method designed to unlock the body’s full potential through exercise, imagery and anatomical understanding. A qualified sports scientist, dancer, choreographer and movement pedagogue, Eric Franklin is regarded as an expert in imagery-based movement pedagogy and Dynamic Neurocognitive Imagery (DNI)™. During his long career, Eric has worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Vienna, Juilliard School New York, NYU, Royal Ballet School London and he is also a member of the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS). Eric has also authored 21 books, many of which have been translated into multiple languages.

Biography

A ski accident in 2008 resulted in serious damage to her left leg. Surgeons predicted a year long recovery and a permanent limp. Using the expert guidance of her teachers, complemented by her own knowledge of Pilates and the apparatus, Julie was walking unaided and without a limp within less than 9 months. 

Julie considers herself an eternal student of the method, continuing her own education with regular 1-1 lessons and studying with her own mentors.

Her North London studio provides a learning environment that nurtures continued growth and progress for both Pilates teachers and Pilates enthusiasts. 

In 2014 Julie won the prestigious international ‘Pilates Anytime Instructor of the year” competition and continues to record online classes for them as a returning visiting Instructor. 

With a lifelong passion for equine studies, Julie considers that Pilates is the perfect way for riders to improve their technique and create a stronger and deeper relationship with their horse. 

Julie presents workshops both in the UK and internationally.

APPI Founder Glenn Withers has been an innovative figure in the world of Pilates for over 20 years. Co-creator of the world renowned APPI method, Glenn has been teaching thousands of clients from all walks of life how to improve their bodies through his precision, innovation and creativeness in his classes and 1:1 sessions. Glenn is one of the world’s most sought after Physiotherapists and Pilates Master Trainers and has worked in elite sport for over 22 years as a consultant to Tottenham Hotspur FC, Manchester United FC, Brentford FC, the English Institute of Sport, British Winter Sports Program for Bobsleigh, Australian Rules Football, Hampstead Triathlon Club, and much more. As an expert on LBP, pelvis, hip and sporting injuries, he is the clinical lead of all APPI treatment centres and education worldwide. Glenn has taught his unique approach to rehabilitation Pilates in over 23 countries worldwide and in 8 different languages, and is a published author of his best-selling book ‘back to life with APPI Pilates’ and a large variety of industry journals.

James D’Silva

This seated workout simplifies the Seated and Standing Garuda Mat Work and makes the more advanced repertoire easily available to the remedial client. A lot of emphasis is placed on energy work and certain aspects of ayurvedic massage and marmara point work are brought into this meditative practice.

Biography

The creator of The Garuda Method, The Garuda Apparatus, and founder of The Garuda Studio. James D’Silva was born and raised in Goa, India, before moving to England to become a professional dancer. Since then, he has performed, choreographed, and taught all over Europe and the USA. Throughout his career, Pilates and body conditioning were an integral part of his training routine. Over the years James has adopted yoga, GYROTONIC®, Feldenkrais, and Alexander Technique influences, generating a unique, holistic, and enjoyable style of movement and exercise. In 2000, James opened his own Pilates studio in London and from this base, his reputation has become well established amongst his many loyal clients. He has worked with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others, and has also created best-selling fitness DVDs with Trudie Styler. James is a certified member of the Pilates Method Alliance and a certified GYROTONIC® Instructor.

Description

No Spinal Forward Flexion

You’ll improve your balance and stability in this Mat based workout, utilizing the Foam Roller & a pair of light hand weights, with Jillian Hessel. She designed this class to avoid forward flexion of the spine, so it is safe for those who have osteopenia, spinal fusion, or other conditions that contraindicate forward flexion. You will have fun with her creative and challenging exercises that will work your entire body. 

NOTE:  This is NOT a workout for a frail individual; it is designed for an active, healthy person who has specific limitations. There WILL be moderate spinal extension, rotation and side flexion in this workout.

Biography

Jillian Hessel has been teaching Pilates since 1981.  Known for her concise verbal instruction and crystal clear imagery, she is a National & International Presenter at Pilates Conferences everywhere.  Since the advent of Covid-19, Jillian has kept busy teaching Group and Private lessons via Zoom.  She is looking forward to  filming 5 new programs for Pilates Anytime in June, 2021.

Biography

Rebekah Rotstein is an industry leader in Pilates, bone health and movement education. She is the creator of the medically-endorsed Buff Bones® system, with hundreds of trained instructors around the world. She partnered with Hartford Hospital’s Bone and Joint Institute to conduct a pilot study with Buff Bones for underserved populations and helped spearhead their in-house bone-safe classes for the community.  Her own diagnosis of osteoporosis at age 28 led her to advocate for others with low bone mass and to provide innovative education and programming for them. With a varied interest in the body and integrated movement, she has participated in eight cadaver dissections with Gil Hedley and John Sharkey and completed programs and coursework in fascia research, somatic studies, and visceral manipulation. Rebekah was one of the first visiting instructors at Pilates Anytime, is a long-standing ambassador for American Bone Health and worked as a partner of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Gill Cummings-Bell BA (Hons.) M.Sc. PGCE. MBA MIfL. is a clinical exercise physiologist who specialises in therapy exercise,  management for training, performance, recovery and body weight management.  Gill has been a leader in fitness, health & wellness education and an international presenter on exercise and nutrition for over 35 years. Gill leads the field of research and tutor education in the UK in therapy exercise, Pilates, nutrition and tutor training.

Following mastery of Pilates Matwork Exercises, it is important as teachers to keep exploring how to continually progress our bodies and our clients’ bodies development. The Pilates Loop Bands offer a simple and extremely effective method for this key progression especially focussing on strength.  Although relatively low resistance, high repetitions and targeted intention, brings awareness to key postural and stabilising muscles we knew we never had yet rely upon for posture and movement control for healthy lives.

Elisa has taught Pilates for over 20 years, ever since discovering the method while training as a ballet dancer in Australia. With interests in dance medicine and Physiotherapy, Elisa graduated from LaTrobe University in Melbourne with an honours degree in Physiotherapy. After gaining an international scholarship and travelling to the UK, Elisa trained with several internationally-renowned Pilates Teaching Schools. Recognising the potential of Pilates for clinical rehabilitation, Elisa and Glenn Withers developed the Modified Pilates programme and co-founded the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. APPI is now internationally recognised as a leading Pilates teacher trainer. Elisa has also pursued her interest in dance medicine, having worked with both the Royal Ballet School and the English National Ballet.

Jo Hatherley

Based upon concepts and exercises presented in ‘The Vital Breath Workshop’, this class aims to improve breath awareness through the use of small props. 

In this class we use a variety of small props to bring attention to our breath. Using props and breathing techniques can help optimise our breathing and, in turn, improve our overall well-being. 

Biography

Jo is certified through Body Control Pilates and teaches at their central London studio.

Jo has Asthma and the degenerative lung condition Bronchiectasis. Her diagnosis led her to train as an exercise specialist in Chronic Respiratory Disease. She is also a certified Buteyko Breathing Method instructor having trained with world renowned breathing expert Patrick McKeown.

Jo created ‘The Vital Breath Workshop’, to educate movement teachers on how to work with clients with respiratory conditions and to increase awareness of dysfunctional breathing.

She has delivered classes and workshops for Body Control Pilates, Asthma UK, the British Lung Foundation, PoTs UK and the Bank of England.

The way we breathe affects the whole body. Jo uses breathing and movement strategies to improve awareness of breathing, reduce breathing dysfunction, increase performance and to improve general health and wellbeing.

Cherry Baker

Description

Is being stable on the floor as functional as it could be? Cherry developed standing Pilates over 25 years ago, which she has developed with love and passion over the years. Join Cherry for a class that embodies the Pilates Principles with a more upright and functional approach. Join us in this standing and kneeling session for you to “cherry pick” ideas that will compliment your floor work and adapt them to your style. From Gait work, balance, gluteal activation and thoracic mobility to visual tracking.

Biography

Cherry Baker has been teaching exercise for over 40 years. Owning two Pilates studios and an Educational Training Company. She is known for her sense of humour and down to earth delivery. Cherry developed a more modern approach to the wonderful works of Pilates. Utilising all the timeless principles of Pilates to work with a variety of clients. She was one of the first to incorporate a more standing approach to Pilates. Cherry has won many awards within the exercise industry amongst them lifetime achievement award with IFS.

Kathy Corey

Description

This course addresses spinal imbalances from functional to structural and teaches how to assess core misalignments.  Flexion, extension, side bending and rotational movements are explored with breath work to correctly balance core movements.  This class helps you to develop an understanding of dynamic alignment and asymmetrical patterning to functionally re-train core and spinal muscles.  The Spine Corrector provides the essential support to maximize dimensional rotation of the spine through its varied ranges of motion.

Kathy Corey is a Master Teacher who began her career with the Pilates Technique in 1979.   She has been the leading expert in the Pilates community for 42 years.  She is the Director of Kathy Corey Pilates.  Kathy Corey Pilates Programs are taught at locations across the United States and in over 30 countries worldwide.  

Kathy Corey Pilates offers a progressive and in-depth educational experience through many levels of training including a Comprehensive Certification Program The KCP Mentor Program,  C.A.R.E.S., a Cancer Awareness and Recovery Exercise System, and a variety of International workshops. 

Kathy Corey is an Advisory Board Member for Pilates Style Magazine, a “Distinguished Instructor” for PilatesAnytime, a PMA Pilates Gold Certified Teacher and a PMA CEC provider.

In 2013, Corey received the first Plaque of Appreciation from Pilates in Asia for her outstanding performance and contribution to the growth of Pilates. 

She has accepted the position of President of the World Pilates Confederation.  The WPC is a European based Pilates organization for the inclusion and support of the Pilates Method of all countries, all schools and all generations of Pilates.  

Master Teacher Kathy Corey received the honor of becoming the President and Director of the International Pilates Heritage Society and Congress held in Joseph Pilates hometown, Monchengladbach, Germany, which is known as the most prestigious International Pilates Congress in the world.

Biography

Ton and Michael are long time veterans of the Pilates Method and are internationally recognized Pilates Teachers, presenters, educators, consultants, and innovators. Their main teacher/mentor was Romana Kryzanowska and they were Teacher Trainers for her Certification program in NYC. Their interpretation of the Pilates Method today is an accumulation of the work from Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Elders, Spiraldynamik® and other modalities and science. 

Together they set up several independent Pilates certification programs internationally, created the TRIADBALL™ and manual, collaborated with Physical Therapists to integrate the Pilates method into patient-based therapy programs and work with athletes and coaches in the NFL, MLB and PGA. They are also the USA representatives for Spiraldynamik® in the fields of Pilates and Movement.
